EDUCATION
Education, mentorship, artistic research, and creative development informed by professional practice in composition, arrangement, music direction, orchestral collaboration, Brazilian music, improvisation, and contemporary ensemble work.

Rafael Piccolotto de Lima’s educational work is deeply connected to his artistic practice as a composer, arranger, conductor, music director, and producer working across orchestral projects, jazz ensembles, Brazilian music, chamber music, recordings, festivals, and collaborative artistic environments developed internationally.
Rather than approaching music education as a discipline separated from artistic practice, his educational work views learning as part of a broader creative process where composition, arrangement, orchestration, improvisation, rehearsal, performance, recording, and artistic reflection continuously inform one another.
Through teaching, mentorship, artistic research, workshops, courses, and educational projects, he works with musicians interested in developing both technical skills and a deeper understanding of their own creative voice.
EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
My teaching is centered around the idea that artistic development emerges through the interaction between technique, listening, creativity, collaboration, experience, and long-term practice.
Rather than treating composition, improvisation, orchestration, music theory, arranging, conducting, or performance as isolated disciplines, my educational work focuses on understanding how these different areas function together inside real artistic processes.
A significant part of this work involves helping musicians develop their own artistic identity, creative process, and musical language. Technical knowledge is important, but it becomes most meaningful when connected to artistic intention, personal expression, and practical musical application.
Brazilian music traditions, jazz improvisation, orchestral thinking, chamber interaction, rhythm section practices, and contemporary ensemble environments are approached as living musical practices connected to real artistic situations rather than abstract theoretical systems.
TEACHING & MENTORSHIP
Alongside my artistic work, I develop educational activities through private mentorship, workshops, masterclasses, university teaching, online courses, ensemble coaching, and long-term artistic development programs.
These activities are designed for composers, arrangers, performers, educators, students, and creative professionals interested in developing their musical language, artistic practice, and professional trajectory.
My teaching experience includes university-level instruction, educational residencies, private mentorship, online learning initiatives, and workshops developed across Brazil and the United States.
RESEARCH & SCHOLARLY WORK

Research and scholarly inquiry play an important role in both my artistic and educational work.
My academic background includes undergraduate studies in Classical Composition and Brazilian Jazz Studies at UNICAMP, a Master of Music degree in Studio Jazz Writing, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Jazz Composition from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.
My research activities have explored topics including Brazilian big band traditions, orchestral collaboration, hybrid musical languages, improvisation, large ensemble writing, creative process, and the interaction between jazz, Brazilian music, and concert music practices.
These investigations continue to influence my work as both an artist and educator.
